As promised in our previous post, we bring you our warmest recommendations what else to visit in the wider Požega area.

 

Slavonia is full of touristic gems, and some of the best are located in our close proximity. So, let’s get started:

Požega county. Considering the fact that is only 3 kilometers away from our resort, this charming baroque town is the first stop of our tour.


First, enjoy your morning coffee at the Holy Trinity Square, which was, during the Medieval period, the biggest square in Croatia. It is surrounded by the old city’s architecture complemented with beautiful baroque arches, which altogether make up for a unique appearance and a wonderful view. Next, take a stroll to the St. Lawrence (Sv. Lovro) Church, built in between 13th and 14th century, which stands out for its Gothic style sanctuary and baroque tower. Near St. Lawrence Church, you can find the newly-renovated St. Teresa of Ávila Square with the century-old ginkgo tree under which you can rest and enjoy the surroundings before you continue with your tour: St. Teresa of Ávila Cathedral, Diocesan Museum and the Old Town, Požega’s historic fortification, today the town’s park and promenade.

Požega is located in a fertile valley, surrounded by an oval-shaped old hill range: Psunj, Papuk, Krndija, Dilj and Požeska Gora. We suggest you activate your muscles and bike up one of the hills, which will offer you a breath-taking view of the Vallis Aurea – amber fields of wheat, fertile lands, picturesque oak forests – as one famous traditional song had described it.   • As previously mentioned, the Papuk mountain is a part of the mountain range encircling Požega, and it is the first, and so far the only UNESCO Geopark in Croatia. Thanks to its geomorphology, climate and vegetation characteristics, Nature Park Papuk’s area of 336 square kilometers is a natural habitat of various plant and animal species. You can either hike or bike to Papuk’s central area – excursion park Jankovac.
  • It is an oasis with several ponds in the heart of a forest area, and will certainly take your breath away any time of the year. You can take an educative walk on the Count Jankovac’s trail, which goes through the most fascinating area of the park. The path also informs you of the cultural, historic and natural attractions of the park, such as the Count Jankovic’s tomb located above the ponds; the graveyard of the local glaziers that resided in the area between 1801 and 1820; and, finally, the beautiful waterfall Skakavac ( grasshopper).
  • Town Kutjevo. Having had its name synonymous with premium wines for centuries, is it even necessary to explain the reasons to visit this town? Namely, Kutjevo wine tradition reaches far into the history, as its oldest wine cellar dates back to 1232, the one of Kutjevo LTD. The cellar has the greatest wine collections in the area, and the oldest wine bottle comes from 1946.

    After visiting this historic wine cellar, we suggest a tour of one very different, the most advanced winery in this region – the Galic winery. Newly founded and equipped with the finest wine production technology, it is absolutely mesmerizing the second you lay your eyes on it, and the wines produced there are nothing less than amazing.

    Being the town of wineries, besides the two wine production giants mentioned above, Kutjevo is the home to other smaller renowned wineries such as Krauthaker, Adzic, Mihalj, Jakobovic, Perak…

  • There, one of the most important architectural complexes of the Slavonian region was built during the Medieval period – the Rudina abbey. Nevertheless, the tradition of construction exists in Rudina since ancient times. Archeologists have discovered Roman bricks, ancient tombstone, and twenty thousand pieces of coins, most of which dated back to 4th century. The most significant finding from Rudina are the so called “Rudina heads”, twenty-two carved corbels which are supposed to have decorated the walls of a Romanesque monastery church. Majority of the heads depict human faces, while some depict full human bodies. Rudina heads is the biggest collection of Romanesque sculptures in the region of continental Croatia.
